Absztrakt (kivonat)

The environment, land cover, including ground and surface water, is put under constant stress by various human activities and natural processes. Remote Sensing data can provide information on changes to surface water and land cover over time, which is essential for environmental monitoring in mining areas. Remote sensing data are also ideal for environmental impact assessment due to their broad spectral range, affordable cost, and rapid coverage of large areas. Synergistic use of remote sensing and ancillary data can be used to create a GIS database, which can be used to store, process, and retrieve the environmental data. The Master’s thesis focuses on the use of Remote Sensing and GIS approaches, as a tool for land cover change and environment analysis in the copper mining area. This research first describes the current copper mining area and its impact on the environment and ecological-geomorphological condition of the area. Using various Remote sensing tools the land cover changes in a copper mining area were analyzed for the five different years – 1976, 1986, 1996, 2006 and 2015. The LANDSAT MSS imagery for 1976 and Landsat Surface Reflectance imagery for the years 1986 and 2015 were used for the study. Along with land cover (LC) maps, vegetation indices like the Normalized Difference Vegetation Analysis (NDVI) maps and Tasseled Cap transformation (TCT) of the area for the given time period have been created, and relative DEMs were created from the ASTER image. After classifying the images based on dominant land cover types, zonal statistics were estimated for each LC map year. The results showed a tremendous increase in the copper mining area and settlements. Though the water body has not suffered much change, but the vegetation area has dramatically changed.
